SUMMARY:Impact of Climate Change on Afghanistan (focus on Water)
DESCRIPTION:On Dec. 1st\, 2022\, ASEF partnered with UnfreezeAfghanistan for a second time\, and held a successful event on “The Impact of Climate Change on Afghanistan”. The event was heard by over 750 people\, and it highlighted the impact of climate change (with a focus on water shortages)\, on the Afghan people. It explored the socio-economic impact\, healthcare impact\, the regional dynamics\, COP27 exclusion\, and security impact. The speakers were renowned water and climate change experts\, as well as policy experts from the region. The session concluded by identifying the low hanging fruits and solutions that needs to be considered by the international community as well as Afghanistan’s defacto government. \n

Houlahan serves on the Foreign Affairs Committee and the Armed Services committee. ASEF emphasized that preventing a failed state in Afghanistan is in the US national self-interest. \nASEF proposed policy solutions to Rep. Houlahan to overcome the current economic and humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan. ASEF has agreed to provide further policy details to Congresswoman Houlahan and her team\, to assess and advocate in the U.S. government. \nASEF thanks Rep. Houlahan for her efforts in Afghanistan and for engaging with the Afghan-American community. \n

DESCRIPTION:ASEF hosted an emergency virtual conference regarding President Biden recent executive order\, which allocate $3.5 billion frozen Afghan reserves for 9/11 families. The event was educational and action oriented\, with speakers who provided thought leadership on the topic. The event also discussed potential solutions and next steps. We thank our distinguished speakers for their invaluable contributions and the nearly 400 attendees for participating and posing great questions. ASEF will continue to be solution oriented\, to raise awareness on the plight of Afghans suffering\, and be a voice for the millions left voiceless.
